A day inside Wox Fad production

What happens before a lit sign reaches the façade. Signage production step by step: from the technical drawing to dimensional letters, digital print and metal structures.

A few minutes before eight, the workshop is still quiet. The first machines are about to start, and on the workbenches lie the sheets that in a few hours will become dimensional letters, panels, light boxes or façade elements. For anyone entering a signage production plant for the first time, the scene can be surprising. It doesn't start with the noise of machines, but with people reading technical drawings.

The morning begins with checking the drawings

Every order goes through one more check. Dimensions, materials, tolerances, notes, the latest changes. Complex projects often go through revisions, and the difference between two versions can be a few millimeters or a change of material. If a part is made from an outdated drawing, the problem doesn't stay in the workshop. It turns into wasted material, lost time and, sometimes, an extra trip to the site.

The first operation of the day is confirming that everyone is working from the same information.

What the installation crew brings back to the workshop

Outside, at the same time, the installation crews are getting ready to leave. Some head to new rollouts, others have scheduled maintenance work. From the outside it may seem that production and installation are separate activities. In reality, they constantly complement each other. Almost every observation made in the field comes back to the workshop and shapes how the next job will be made.

Maybe a certain fixing system was hard to mount. Maybe a structure could have been designed differently to cut installation time. Or maybe a material performed better than expected after a few years of exposure. These details don't appear in catalogs or data sheets. They accumulate over time, from hundreds of projects.

The CNC area: the result is decided before the first cut

In the CNC area the actual transformation of the materials begins. The router bits follow the contours generated in design, and the first components emerge from the sheets of composite aluminum, PVC or acrylic.

To an outside observer, it looks like the machine does all the work. In reality, the result is decided before the bit touches the material. The choice of tool, the feed rate, the cutting direction and the way the sheet is clamped all influence edge quality and the finishing time required.

Dimensional letters are made by hand

Further on, in the workshop where dimensional letters are made, the pace changes. A lot of manual work comes in here. Each acrylic face has to fit the sides perfectly, every joint is checked and finished before the letter receives its lighting system.

Lighting is one of those steps that only seem simple until you start building such letters. It isn't enough to have light inside. What matters is where each LED module sits, the distance to the face, the light distribution and the color temperature. A difference of a few centimeters can produce shadows or bright spots visible the moment it's switched on.

The test done in the dark

Before a letter leaves the workshop, the lights are switched off and each piece is tested in exactly the conditions it will work in.

This is the moment when details impossible to spot in daylight appear.

Digital print: here the problem is color

In the digital print area the atmosphere is different. The challenge isn't shape, it's color. Clients know the shades of their own brand very well, and small differences become obvious immediately. The same color code can look different on different materials or depending on the light. That's why, before the final print, proofs and comparisons are made on the actual substrate.

After printing come contour cutting and application. These are operations that demand patience and attention to detail. Incorrect blade pressure, a film applied at the wrong temperature or a speck of dust left under the sticker can ruin the final result, even if the rest of the job is executed flawlessly.

Metal fabrication: the part no one sees

In the metal fabrication workshop, the part almost no one notices after installation is built. The structures that support the light boxes, the brackets, frames and load-bearing elements stay hidden from view, but they are the ones that have to withstand years of wind, rain, temperature swings and the weight of the whole build.

The look of a sign draws attention. The structure is what keeps it there.

The space where things are allowed to fail

There's also a space that doesn't belong to any order in production. That's where new materials, finishes, lighting combinations or construction solutions are tested before being proposed to a client. Some tests confirm the idea works. Others prove exactly the opposite.

That is precisely their purpose. It's far better for an experiment to fail in a workshop than on the façade of a building after installation.

The final check

Toward the end of the day, the works are assembled, powered, measured and viewed as a complete whole. At this stage, things appear that can't be seen in the drawing or on the individual pieces: a joint that needs adjusting, a letter that needs repositioning by two millimeters, or a cable that can be hidden better.

Only after these checks does packing begin.

In the evening, the crews return from the field. They come back with photos, observations and questions. Sometimes they confirm everything went exactly as planned. Other times they bring information that will change how the next job is made.

What remains after installation

Seen from the outside, a sign looks like a simple object mounted on a building. Behind it, though, are dozens of small decisions, made at every stage of the process. Most will never be noticed by the client. But they are exactly what makes the difference between a job that looks good on installation day and one that keeps looking good years later.
